We were lucky enough to get our hands on a Nikon Z6 a week early with the latest firmware that brings EYE-AF. As you know, I love taking the cameras into Real World situations to test them out. That’s exactly what we did this time around with our model.
Not only did I do regular hand held shooting with the Nikon Z6. But I also broke out the Sony a7 III and Canon EOS R, which both have eye-af. On top of the hand held shooting, we set up all three cameras with their respective 70-200 2.8’s and Atomos recorders. The Atomos’ allow us to record our EVF and share with you a first person look inside the camera.

So what do you think, did Nikon do a good job on the first go around?
Phew! that was one of the greatest reviews i have ever seen on these three
Jared, around the 19-20 minute mark where you are seeing the Nikon focus on the trees. The quick way to get out of that is to hit the OK button. When you do that a box comes up that you can move to wherever you’d like. Then you can start over
This is not a test, is a massacre lol Sony is on a whole other level
I'm wondering if your can calibrate the to adjust for the off focus?
Did you ever think to compare Male versus female, older and younger subjects? What about different ethnicities?
Is there any chance Nikon can fix the eyelash focus issue? I don't want to have to buy the Sony, it feels terrible in my hands, which are comically large for my frame. I'd much rather buy the Nikon, but pics of running and playing kid that won't hold still is my target and the Sony nails it.
I want buy one z6vs7iii?
please reply😑 which only one lens best for travel photography ???
You're awesome. Great review. Very helpful. I'm deciding between Nikon and Sony… long time Nikon user, but focusing has always been a challenge and I think I need to try the Sony for now – I do portraits, but I also want something for photographing my son's football games. On another note, I just have to say, you really should consider a haircut. You are a handsome guy, (I'm a woman and a photographer) and your hair is a distraction – does nothing for you. It's fun, and has character, but just sayin'…. maybe it's time for a change? 😉 It would really be a 'wow' to see you all cleaned up! Do it!
Wish the xt3 would have joined this test group.
The eye lash focus is a non-starter. That's completely useless.
I’m interested in the external battery attachment you have mounted on top of the camera. Is that batt used for the camera or for the vlog camera?
I grew up as a Nikon guy. They make great cameras. I have allot of money invested into them. But I been out of photography for a little bit. While I hate the term fanbow, I would have to say I am a Nikon fan. The color, quality, ergonomics, and easy of use make Nikon my favorite. But your review makes me wanna cry. I use to like Sony electronics alot, but I find them not as good anymore. But their are some things they defiantly do good at. And this is clearly one of them. They put Nikon and Sony to shame. From what I seen in this video Nikon took lead over Canon for sports photography? That was not expected, and I'm happy to see that, even though I don't shoot any sports work, if I did, I would have went Canon on the past. Maybe I still wood because of the color. But for the Rest I like Nikons warmer more natural color. Sony seems to be inline with Canon, which surprises me actually. Or is their a option to make it set more like the Nikon?
I hate to say it, But Sony looks like they are taking the lead here. I don't like Sony's business practices either, but they are defiantly making a camera that can produce some quality results. Both Nikon and Canon need to get their heads out of their buts. Sony is the newcomer, they have no excuse.
Having bad knees and limited resources now, it makes me question what to do if I get back into photography. I cant do wedding photography no more, and that were Nikon excelled. Do I sell my gear and go Sony? Or is Nikon going to do something about this or just focus on high end consumer grade gear instead of pro. Not saying it isn't pro gear, but they are starting to focus their resources towards broadening their line toward consumer and high end consumer instead of pro use.
Did they ever fix the Z6 focusing issues?
WAIT… what nikkor lens are you using!? You gotta use the Z lenses…only THEN will you realize that the Nikon AF is just as good as Sony.
😉
Jared, this is the best comparative video that touches on Autofocus for these three major camera manufacturers. I've been considering the following cameras: Nikon D850, Nikon Z7, Canon EOS R, and the Sony A9. Your video really helped me prioritize my list – thx.
Hey! About this "lock af on a tree" problem… I think the problem might be the fact that all three cameras have different positions relative to the tree.
In Nikon case, Your 'fro is covering part of a tree, which actually has similar shape and texture as a distant tree. So, the camera is not "seeing" the change …
So I have to replace 45 year collection of Nikon lenses for to move to any mirrorless system. Nikon only has a couple of good Z mount lenses and has…at best…. a second rate camera.
The A7Riii and now the A7RIV will crap all over anything Nikon makes for some years to come and Sony glass has ZERO weaknesses.
Tell me why on earth I would even think about staying Nikon?
After 45 years of loyal patronage I regretfully suggest that Nikon may kiss my ass.
Great work as always Jared!
Jared, please do a video on shooting groups, 5 people, 49 people, etc. on Nikon vs Sony mirrorless. What focus points do you set up?.
i want that z6 because now im currently using d750..but im afraid that if im using the ftz adapter the autofocus speed would be an issue..should i get the z6 with 1 slot and expensive xqd card 😐 or totally change to sony a7iii ..hmmm
was the eos r updated to the latest 1.2 firmware version for that testing?
6:51, WHAT ARE THOSE
I need to stop watching vids that put the A7III up against anything else. I made the switch to the Sony 6 months or so ago, after shooting Canon for years. I kept thinking what if I had made a mistake..Well it's obvious I didn't. That Eye AF is the most amazing tool I have ever used. Came in mighty handy on my first safari in Kenya.
Buying anything except of Sony for photos is basically burning money at this point.
